Description
The objective of the air riding thrust balance system is to limit the axial displacement of the rotor relative to the stator.By limiting the axial displacement between rotor and stator the force on the foil bearing can be limited such that it will not be damaged under high maneuver loads or landing loads.A force balance system is created by using a high pressure source air from compressor discharge, and cavities designed with specific areas to control axial restoring forces relative to the cavity clearances.
