Description

Statement of the problem: Electrical power for sensors, telemetry, and remote activation is essential to ocean farming. This is especially true for offshore macroalgae farming where there does not need to be routine human presence. However, insight on the performance of the farm systems in response to environmental inputs and crop growth is needed for secure and profitable operation. Project Approach: This project will develop a wave energy conversion (WEC) technology by adapting our Variable Displacement Sper Buoy (VDSB) to serve as a point absorber WEC. This power source will enable the establishment of a “Smart Farm” where shore-based farm managers can respond remotely to the operational needs of the farm. Phase I Objectives: 1. Thoroughly characterize a Rise™Robotics actuator in power absorption modes. 2. Model and design an optimal point-absorber PTO mechanism for our VDSB. 3. Fabricate and laboratory test the PTO hardware. 4. Design and cost a VDSB WEC prototype for fabrication, installation and testing in Phase II Commercial Applications and Other Benefits: If our Phase I tests and modeling are successful, we will be poised to fabricate, deploy, and evaluate the system at a large kelp farm in Kodiak, Alaska. This power generation system will enable the concurrent development sensor suite and a telemetry system essential to the ocean-based macroalgae farming sector. If that technology demonstration is successful, we will commercialize this system to the seaweed farming sector and to other aquaculture interests.
