About Foreign Trade Zones

Foreign Trade Zones are secure areas under U.S. Customs and Border Protection supervision that are generally considered outside the customs territory of the United States for purposes of duty payment. The FTZ program, administered by the Foreign-Trade Zones Board (Commerce/CBP), enables domestic activity that might otherwise be carried out overseas by allowing delayed or reduced duty payments.

For federal contractors, FTZs represent opportunities in customs brokerage, logistics management, warehousing operations, and trade facilitation services. Defense contractors use FTZs to process imported components for military systems, while technology firms leverage zones for electronics assembly and distribution.
