Why does International Traffic in Arms Regulations matter?

ITAR controls the export and import of defense-related articles, services, and technical data on the United States Munitions List (USML). It restricts access to defense technology to U.S. persons unless specifically authorized.

Ask a question

Requirements

Manufacturers, exporters, and brokers of defense articles must register with DDTC. Export licenses are required for sharing defense articles, technical data, or defense services with foreign persons. Violations carry civil penalties up to $500K and criminal penalties up to $1M and 10 years imprisonment.

Why It Matters for Contractors

Defense contractors handling items on the USML must maintain ITAR compliance programs, including technology control plans, visitor access controls, and employee training. ITAR compliance is often a prerequisite for classified and export-controlled defense contracts.
