Description

The overall aim of the award was to understand how the anisotropy of plant cell expansion is controlled by cellulose microfibrils. As experimental material, the project used roots of the popular model plant species, Arabidopsis thaliana. In general, cellulose governs expansion anisotropy by virtue of its strength and organized deposition. Because of their rigidity and alignment, cellulose microfibrils endow the cell wall with mechanical anisotropy; cell walls deform more easily in the direction perpendicular to the microfibrils compared to the parallel direction. Expansion anisotropy thus depends appreciably on the control of cellulose alignment.. Authors: Baskin, Tobias I. [Univ. of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA (United States)]. DOE Contract: FG02-03ER15421.
