A contract line item that gives the government a unilateral right to purchase additional supplies or services at a predetermined price within a specified timeframe. Option CLINs are priced at contract award but are not funded or exercised unless the government chooses to do so. They provide flexibility to extend scope without re-competing the requirement.

Ask about OPTPriced at contract award with terms set in advance. Price may be the same as the base CLIN or include a negotiated escalation factor. The option price is evaluated during source selection but does not obligate funds until exercised. Options must be exercised per the contract schedule and within FAR limitations.
When the government anticipates needing additional quantities, extended services, or follow-on work but wants the flexibility to decide later based on funding availability, performance quality, or changing requirements. Must be evaluated as part of the total contract price during source selection per FAR 17.206.
